My final photography project artist statement:

“Operators” is a chain of tiny landscapes strung between two people. These photos were taken on the walk between the two subjects’ homes. The disjointed quality created by each photograph’s separate context, however, is meant to suggest an archipelago of places that a tin can telephone string hops between like islands. Each segment of the route is given equal consideration, and seeks to emphasize corners of the world that do not typically take place within our highly architectural lives. I believe the back door to the city, “the gateway to its magic, invisible, hybrid heart” (Salman Rushdie), lies in a small, overlooked place similar to these scenes.

My work is primarily concerned with routes and the many spaces and states of mind we travel through each day. The destinations we move towards can exist as distances, times measured into the past or future, or objects and feelings we don’t yet know the exact location of. “Operators” expresses the arbitrary and tenuous but ultimately successful nature of one specific route, and leaves both the reason for establishing and relying upon this route ambiguous. Now that it exists, though, anything may traverse this thin avenue, and possibly widen it.
