My childhood pal Ru and his parents visited me last week. They'd whisked Ru out of LA a week before and all of them were in a post-graduation fog. During the trip Ru was hammering out a reality tv concept for an LA film guy via the email.

His parents were laid back and charming as usual, with interesting newsy things to discuss, although almost nothing about home. They'd acted as a kind of collective father figure for me until I turned five because my dad had been an absent businessman. Now they invite my Dad to their Thanksgivings so he doesn't spend them alone, and buy me meals and IMAX tickets, etc. They're great.

Strolling around in James Bay with them, I finally deciphered The Sunglass Effect too. Earlier we'd been talking about boxes, all kinds: the literal boxes we live and cruise around in, and the box-shaped thoughts and emotions this leads to. Ru said he couldn't wear sunglasses because they make him feel invisible, and I told him about how the world seems to part for me and my sunglasses, and objects move just beyond my reach. We realized that covering our eyes makes us think our bodies are enclosed too, because of our wealth o box experiences.

The radio just broke from the steady orchestral stuff and is playin a laid-back Hawaiian song (Taj Mahal and the Hula Blues Band!) in recognition of "the first Saturday of June." Alright.
