06.11.06 - 2:36 p.m. When I was younger I used to think I could see atoms and photons (yes they looked the same). I loved the movie Pi and I loved to think that when I grew up I would become in touch with all kinds of helpful patterns. Maybe I'd eventually be able to pick out covalent bonds or something in the flickering sea of particles I saw in stucco walls. The only mathematical universal that's cropped up for me so far is the fact that I always underspend gift certificates by $2.50. Something I remembered yesterday was how shocked I was to find out that Albert Einstein was required to live in a house and pay electrical bills and horseplay with his kids and sometimes wash the dishes like everyone else. When I was a kid and feeling down I used to lament all the things Albert could have discovered if he'd had more time to himself, like I did right then because I was alone and feeling down. If only I'd been Einstein!
